💹Effective Social Media Marketing with Zero Ad Spend!

‘M’ is for the MYSTERY of executing effective marketing to get your business in front of the right audience. Even if you have a huge ad budget, without the right message, budget can be blown quickly.
When I stepped into the online space with my coaching business, I thought I’d spend what little budget I had doing ads but that was ok because I’d make the money right back with all the sales I would earn from my coaching course.
Nothing could be further from the truth! I had a couple of key issues that I hadn’t addressed yet.
- No one knew me online yet. I was a newbie asking an unknown audience to do business with me.
- I didn’t even know who my audience was.
So, they didn’t know me, and I did NOT know them. People were seeing an ad to buy a course from someone they had never heard of, knew nothing about, and did not feel any kind of a connection with.
Think about the times you purchased online, visited a storefront, or called for a service. What prompted you to choose that business? An aggressive ad you saw over and over, or you received emails or continually saw interesting, helpful, or inspirational stuff from the business?
Well, let’s review…what’s the #1 key to sales?
People do business with those they know, like, and trust!
That’s a bit of a challenge for a brand-new business with a minimal marketing budget, right?
Yea, sure is!
When my ad flopped and I didn’t bring in record-breaking sales for the course I had worked so hard on AND I know serves people well, my confidence took a hit!
“Maybe I’m not cut out for this coaching thing.”
“The course may not be as good as I thought it was.”
“Maybe I need to get a job.”
…the same nonsense that haunts most business owners in the quest for finding what works.
My only option then was Organic Marketing.
Initial thoughts…YUK!
Posting to social medial all day long, allowing the world to see what I eat, where I go, and what I chose to wear everyday…are you kidding me??
“Yea, maybe I do need to just go back to working for someone else…this sucks!”
However, in the spirit, NEVER QUIT and BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY…I tried Organic Marketing…or at least what I thought I was supposed to do to market organically.
I started posting all day long…all kinds of stuff…like throwing spaghetti on the wall to see if anything would stick.
And…nothing!
Ok, so I tried ads then I tried that organic thing and no traction whatsoever. No likes, no comments, no shares! And no sales! Confidence takes another hit and I’m for real about to give up!
I mean, why the hell not…I’ve tried everything, right?
Then I caught a lucky break…no, my course didn’t suddenly start ‘flying off the shelf’. I learned from a mentor that sales is more about having a conversation and is NOT about me!
Well, how was I supposed to start a conversation with people when no one was showing up?
Simple…just start talking.
Now, I know that when you’ve started a business, invested money, developed an amazing product or service, and you are officially open for business or maybe been in business for a while; you just want paying clients/customers fast.
I did too!
But if you want loyal customers, you must build a relationship.
To build a relationship, share content with your future customers that serves them AND gives insight into your business. It might be a blog/vlog, YouTube channel, or podcast. If you are camera shy, write a blog.
This was a game changer for me.
Here’s what I did!
- Changed my website platform to Kajabi (Hey, you can get a 14-Day Trial with Kajabi here!)
- Started my blog/vlog (I shared in my Blogs/Vlogs as if I had an audience of thousands) I talked about things I knew people could benefit from, things I coach people on already!
- Created a posting strategy (My Plant & Grow strategy is found in my FREE e-book; Mind Your Own Business: 6 Steps to Building Your Dream Business From Scratch) Plant & Grow removed the constant need to post content ALL DAY LONG!
Two tips about my Plant & Grow Organic Strategy…
One, do NOT focus on likes, comments, and shares! If it does not equal a visit to your site, a phone call from a human, or a visit to your location, it’s completely irrelevant. That’ll kill your confidence quick if you base your success on that!
Two, (and this is the doozy) when you post consistently on Social Media platforms, the way the algorithm works, your content gets shown to a broader audience…even though you aren’t spending a dime on ads!
I knew I was on to something when I checked my analytics on my new fancy Kajabi website and in a single 30-day period I had over 4000 visits to my site!!!!
Cha-ching!
But more importantly, I accomplished what every business owner should…I created relationships with my audience.
Wha-Laaaaaa … Know, Like & Trust!
I love not feeling ‘Salesy’ or pushy. I love serving others and experiencing wins with them! That’s what it’s all about!
